Dahlia seeds are an affordable way to grow a stunning array of dahlias. Many varieties are cross-pollinated, giving you a vibrant mix of colors throughout the season.
Sowing Your Seeds
Sow your seeds in late winter or early spring, either in a greenhouse or propagator. For the best results, sow individually in pots or cell trays. The earlier you start, the longer your dahlias will flower in mid to late summer.
Preparing the Seed Tray
Fill a pot or seed tray with moist compost and lightly firm the surface. Gently press the seeds into the compost, and don’t forget to label them! If you have mice or squirrels nearby, cover the tray for protection.
Germination
With the right temperature, your seeds should germinate within a couple of weeks.
Potting On
If you’ve started your seeds in trays, it’s time to transfer seedlings into larger pots—9cm square pots work well.
Hardening Off
Before planting outdoors, harden off your young plants. Keep them outside during the day and bring them in at night for a few weeks to help them adjust.
Planting Out
Once the risk of frost has passed and most of the April and May showers are over, you can plant your dahlias in their final positions. Avoid planting too early—small plants are vulnerable to frost, wet conditions, slugs, and mice.
Saving Seeds
In autumn, you can collect seeds from your dahlias and store them over winter for planting next year, continuing the cycle of vibrant blooms.
