Dahlia Showpiece Double Hybrids bring the quintessential charm of classic dahlia blooms to your cutting garden with their magnificent fully double flowers. These stunning plants produce large, flat-petalled blooms that showcase the traditional decorative form that has made dahlias beloved by gardeners and florists alike. Reaching an impressive height of 1.5 metres, these vigorous plants create a spectacular display from midsummer through to the first frosts, providing an abundance of flowers perfect for indoor arrangements.

The fully double blooms are characterised by their symmetrical arrangement of broad, flat petals that create a generous flower head bursting with colour. These decorative hybrids offer a wonderful mix of shades, making each plant a delightful surprise as the flowers emerge. The substantial size of the blooms makes them exceptional as cut flowers, with stems strong enough to support the weighty flower heads and long-lasting vase life that ensures your arrangements remain fresh for days.

Growing dahlias from seed is a rewarding experience that allows you to cultivate a diverse collection of colours and subtle variations within your garden. Showpiece Double Hybrids are particularly well-suited to our British gardens, thriving in our temperate climate when given the right care and attention. Position your dahlias in a sunny spot with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, as this encourages the most prolific flowering and strongest stems.

The tall stature of these plants makes them ideal for the back of borders or as statement features in dedicated cutting gardens. Their height also means they benefit from staking, particularly in exposed positions where wind might damage the stems. The continuous flowering habit ensures you can harvest armfuls of blooms throughout the season without diminishing the garden display.

Dahlia seeds are an affordable way to grow a stunning array of dahlias. Many varieties are cross-pollinated, giving you a vibrant mix of colors throughout the season.

Sowing Your Seeds
Sow your seeds in late winter or early spring, either in a greenhouse or propagator. For the best results, sow individually in pots or cell trays. The earlier you start, the longer your dahlias will flower in mid to late summer.

Preparing the Seed Tray
Fill a pot or seed tray with moist compost and lightly firm the surface. Gently press the seeds into the compost, and don’t forget to label them! If you have mice or squirrels nearby, cover the tray for protection.

Germination
With the right temperature, your seeds should germinate within a couple of weeks.

Potting On
If you’ve started your seeds in trays, it’s time to transfer seedlings into larger pots—9cm square pots work well.

Hardening Off
Before planting outdoors, harden off your young plants. Keep them outside during the day and bring them in at night for a few weeks to help them adjust.

Planting Out
Once the risk of frost has passed and most of the April and May showers are over, you can plant your dahlias in their final positions. Avoid planting too early—small plants are vulnerable to frost, wet conditions, slugs, and mice.

Saving Seeds
In autumn, you can collect seeds from your dahlias and store them over winter for planting next year, continuing the cycle of vibrant blooms.
