The Spindle is a fantastic native shrub that puts on a brilliant autumn show. Its most striking feature is the unusual bright pink fruits that split open to reveal orange seeds, looking like tiny exotic flowers. These appear in autumn alongside leaves that turn brilliant shades of red and purple. The combination is really eye-catching. In spring and summer, it’s a fresh green shrub with small creamy-white flowers that bees love. Growing to about 3-4 metres tall, it has an open, airy structure that works well at the back of borders or in natural hedges.

The stems have a lovely pale green colour and interesting corky ridges. This is a plant that comes into its own in autumn when many other shrubs are starting to fade. Though quite modest for most of the year, its autumn performance alone makes it worth growing. Birds love the seeds, and the leaves are a food plant for several moth species.

Spindle is very easy to grow in gardens. It’s happy in most soils and will grow in sun or partial shade – though autumn colours are best in sunny spots. It doesn’t need regular pruning but can be trimmed in late winter to keep its shape. If you want to grow it as a hedge, trim it after flowering. It’s quite drought tolerant once established but water well in the first growing season. A yearly mulch with garden compost helps keep the soil moist.
