The Beech ‘Black Swan’ – Fagus sylvatica ‘Black Swan’ is a spectacular deciduous tree that commands attention with its dramatic, near-black foliage and graceful cascading habit. This exceptional cultivar produces dark purple leaves that are considerably darker than other purple beech varieties, creating an almost ebony appearance that makes it one of the most striking ornamental trees available for gardens. The broadly ovate leaves possess a magnificent glossy finish that catches the light beautifully, adding depth and lustre to the intense colouration.
What truly sets ‘Black Swan’ apart is its architectural weeping form, which develops into a stunning domed shape at maturity. The cascading branches create a dramatic silhouette that provides year-round structural interest, making it an outstanding specimen tree for lawns, large borders, or as a focal point in garden design. In autumn, the foliage transforms into rich coppery orange tones before falling, extending the seasonal display well into the cooler months.
It’s important to understand that this cultivar requires full sun to maintain its extraordinary dark colouration. Leaves growing in shaded portions of the tree will quickly revert to dark green, so positioning is crucial when planning your planting scheme. Choose an open, sunny location where the tree can receive maximum light throughout the day to ensure the foliage retains its signature near-black appearance.
Growing Conditions and Care
Like all beech trees, ‘Black Swan’ thrives in free-draining loamy soil and will perform best in positions that avoid waterlogging. The species is remarkably adaptable to various soil types, including chalk and clay, provided drainage is adequate. When planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter to improve soil structure and ensure the root ball is level with the surrounding ground.
Water newly planted specimens regularly during their first growing season, particularly during dry spells, to help establish a strong root system. Once established, beech trees are relatively drought-tolerant, though young trees benefit from supplementary watering during prolonged dry periods in spring and summer.
This cultivar is fully hardy and well-suited to the British climate, tolerating exposed positions once established. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, and maintain a mulch layer around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch away from direct contact with the trunk to prevent rot.
Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. If pruning is required, undertake this work between late autumn and late winter when the tree is dormant. Beech trees can bleed sap if pruned during the growing season, so timing is important.
The supplied plant at 60-80cm represents the current height and is growing in a 2-litre pot, perfect for establishing quickly in its permanent position. This size offers excellent value, allowing you to watch your tree develop its characteristic form over the coming years whilst being manageable to plant and transport.
