Ginkgo ‘Pendula’ – Ginkgo biloba – is a weeping form of the ancient Maidenhair Tree, top grafted onto a 100cm stem to create an elegant architectural specimen. This remarkable cultivar transforms the typically upright ginkgo into a graceful, cascading feature with pendulous branches that sweep downwards in dramatic fashion, creating a living sculpture perfect for smaller gardens or as a striking focal point in larger spaces.

The fan-shaped leaves, characteristic of all ginkgos, emerge fresh green in spring and maintain their distinctive two-lobed shape throughout the growing season. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into a spectacular display of golden-yellow, creating a waterfall of colour that rivals any ornamental tree. These unique leaves, unchanged for millions of years, add an ancient quality to contemporary garden designs and look particularly effective when the drooping branches frame pathways or water features.

This top-grafted specimen arrives at 100-125cm, with the weeping habit beginning immediately above the graft point on the clear stem. The cascading branches will gradually extend downwards and outwards over time, creating an increasingly impressive silhouette. Unlike the standard species which can grow to enormous heights, the ‘Pendula’ form remains more compact and manageable, with its ultimate size determined by the height of the graft and the natural spread of the weeping branches.

Ginkgo ‘Pendula’ thrives in most well-drained soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions, from full sun to partial shade, though the best autumn colour develops in sunnier positions. Once established, this tree demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and remarkable resilience to pollution, pests, and diseases. It’s virtually maintenance-free, requiring no regular pruning unless you wish to control the spread of the weeping branches or remove any shoots that appear below the graft point.

The structural beauty of this weeping ginkgo provides year-round interest. In winter, the bare branches create an intricate tracery against the sky, whilst the distinctive bark adds textural interest. Spring brings fresh growth, summer offers cooling green foliage, and autumn delivers that unforgettable golden display. This is a tree that earns its place in any garden, whether planted as a specimen in a lawn, positioned beside a patio, or used to create a focal point in a mixed border.

Care Guide

Plant in well-drained soil in a position that receives at least partial sun for best results. Ginkgos tolerate most soil types except waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, after which the tree becomes remarkably drought-tolerant. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Remove any shoots that emerge from the rootstock below the graft point to maintain the weeping form. The tree requires no regular pruning, though you can trim back extending branches in late winter if needed to control size. Ginkgos are exceptionally hardy and trouble-free, with no significant pest or disease problems.
