Japanese Black Pine
Pinus thunbergii
The Japanese Black Pine – Pinus thunbergii is renowned for its dramatic appearance and robust nature. Traditional in Japanese coastal gardens, it develops into a striking specimen with distinctive dark green needles and architectural branching.
Popular cultivars include the compact ‘Thunderhead’, perfect for smaller gardens with its dense, rounded habit. ‘Kotobuki’ offers a narrow, upright form, while ‘Shirome-janome’ features attractive white-tipped shoots in spring.
In maturity, the species displays rugged, deeply furrowed black bark contrasting beautifully with its rich green needles. The stiff needles, held in pairs and reaching 12cm long, create bold texture throughout the year. New spring growth or ‘candles’ emerge dramatically white, darkening to green as they mature.
Exceptionally tolerant of coastal conditions, this pine thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Its natural resistance to salt spray and strong winds makes it ideal for exposed gardens. Particularly suited to training in the Japanese style (niwaki), it responds well to careful pruning.
