Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ is a unique and striking dwarf cultivar of the Japanese Black Pine. This slow-growing evergreen conifer typically reaches a height of 1-2 metres over 10 years, maintaining a narrow, upright columnar form. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for small gardens, rock gardens, or as a container specimen. The ‘Kotobuki’ cultivar is prized for its distinctive appearance, featuring dense, upright branches clothed in stiff, dark green needles that grow in pairs. These needles, usually 7-12 cm long, give the plant a bold texture and create an interesting architectural element in the garden.

Unlike its parent species, ‘Kotobuki’ rarely produces cones, focusing its energy instead on maintaining its tight, columnar shape. The bark is greyish-brown and becomes more textured with age, adding to the plant’s visual interest. This cultivar retains its deep green colour throughout the year, providing a constant structural presence in the garden. Its unique form makes it an ideal focal point or accent plant, particularly effective when used in Japanese-style gardens or modern minimalist landscapes.

Plant Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It’s tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including sandy or rocky soils, and can handle coastal conditions. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Pruning is generally unnecessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can remove any damaged or dead branches as needed. Feed sparingly with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers in spring.
