The Black Walnut – Juglans nigra is a magnificent large tree that brings real presence to spacious gardens. Its broad, spreading crown creates a wonderful silhouette, while the long, feathery leaves cast dappled shade beneath. Each leaf is made up of multiple leaflets, creating an airy, tropical effect in summer.
This impressive tree develops deeply furrowed, dark bark that adds winter interest. In autumn, round green fruits appear, each containing an edible nut within a thick, aromatic husk. The leaves turn a lovely butter yellow before falling, creating a golden carpet beneath.
While it needs space to grow, this tree makes a fantastic specimen for larger gardens. It develops a beautiful natural shape without much maintenance. The dappled shade it creates is perfect for sitting under on warm summer days, though be mindful that some plants struggle to grow beneath black walnuts due to natural compounds in their roots.
Plant your Black Walnut in rich, well-drained soil in a position with full sun. Young trees need plenty of water to establish a good root system, but mature specimens are quite drought tolerant. They don’t need regular feeding but benefit from a spring mulch. Choose the planting spot carefully as these trees get quite large and can affect other plants growing nearby. No regular pruning is needed beyond removing any damaged branches in winter.
