The Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ is a brilliant choice for UK gardeners looking to add a touch of elegance to their outdoor space. This striking variety of Juniperus scopulorum stands out with its narrow, columnar shape and beautiful blue-green foliage. It’s perfect for smaller gardens or areas where you want to create a strong vertical accent.
‘Blue Arrow’ grows slowly, reaching about 4-5 metres tall but staying slim at only 60-90 cm wide. This makes it ideal for tight spots or for creating a living screen without taking up too much ground space. The dense, upright branches are covered in soft, scale-like needles that give the tree a lovely texture and colour all year round.
This juniper is a tough cookie. It copes well with the British climate, including coastal areas where many other plants struggle. It’s also quite happy in urban settings, shrugging off pollution and poor soil. This resilience means you can plant it and enjoy it without too much fuss.
Gardeners love ‘Blue Arrow’ for its versatility. You can use it as a standalone feature plant, perhaps in a large pot on a patio. Or plant a row of them to create a smart, formal hedge or windbreak. They look great in modern garden designs, adding structure and a pop of blue-green colour. They’re equally at home in more traditional settings, where their tidy shape contrasts nicely with softer, flowing plants.
Wildlife fans will be pleased to know that junipers are good for garden birds. The dense foliage offers shelter and nesting sites, while the small blue berries (which appear on female plants) are a food source for many bird species.
‘Blue Arrow’ is a relatively new variety, developed in the 1980s in America. It was chosen for its particularly upright growth and attractive colour. Since then, it’s become a favourite with gardeners around the world, including here in the UK.
For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that won’t outgrow its welcome, Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ is a top choice. It brings year-round interest, structure, and a touch of the extraordinary to any garden. Whether you’re planning a new garden or looking to spruce up an existing one, this juniper could be just the plant you need.
Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’ is a doddle to care for, which is great news for busy UK gardeners. It thrives in full sun but can handle partial shade too. The main thing is well-drained soil – it doesn’t like wet feet. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it settle in. After that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is plenty. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but if you want to tidy it up, do it in late winter or early spring. Overall, with minimal care, your ‘Blue Arrow’ will stay healthy and looking good for years.
