The English Walnut – Juglans regia, also known as the English or Persian Walnut, is a proper stunner of a tree that’ll have you dreaming of autumn harvests. This deciduous beauty can grow to a hefty 30 metres tall, with a broad, rounded crown that provides ample shade on a sunny day. The bark’s greyish-brown and fissured, giving the trunk a rugged, characterful look. Its leaves are compound, with 5-9 leaflets, turning a lovely yellow in autumn before they drop. But it’s the fruit that really steals the show – those familiar walnuts encased in green husks that split open when ripe.
The nuts are a right treat, perfect for everything from salads to cakes. Mind you, you’ll need patience; these trees don’t start producing until they’re about 10 years old. They’re pretty hardy sorts, though they can be a bit fussy about late frosts nipping their new growth. The roots produce a chemical called juglone, which can inhibit the growth of some plants nearby, so give it plenty of space. In our climate, they do best in sheltered spots with deep, well-drained soil. A mature Walnut is a real legacy tree, providing food and beauty for generations to come.
