The Monterey Pine is a fast-growing evergreen that brings year-round interest to gardens. Its bright green needles grow in bundles of three, creating a dense, attractive canopy that offers shelter to wildlife. This pine reaches impressive heights, making it a brilliant choice for screening or as a standout specimen tree.

The tree has a naturally lovely pyramid shape when young, developing into a broader crown with age. Its bark is deeply furrowed and dark grey, adding winter interest. The pine cones are glossy brown and remain on the tree for many years, bringing extra charm to your garden.

Originally from California’s central coast, this hardy pine has become a favourite in gardens thanks to its quick growth and adaptability. It can grow up to a metre per year in good conditions, perfect if you’re looking to create privacy or shelter rather quickly.

Plant your Monterey Pine in well-drained soil in full sun. While it tolerates most soil types, it particularly thrives in slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly in the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but once established, it’s quite drought tolerant. No regular pruning is needed – simply remove any dead or crossing branches in late summer. This tree is fairly wind-resistant but may benefit from shelter in extremely exposed sites.
