Juniperus communis ‘Green Carpet’ is a striking cultivar of the common juniper that offers a unique, prostrate form perfect for modern landscape designs. This dwarf conifer lives up to its name by creating a dense, carpet-like spread of foliage that hugs the ground, rarely growing more than 20-30cm in height but spreading up to 2 metres wide.
The foliage of ‘Green Carpet’ is its standout feature. Bright green needles form a thick, textured mat that maintains its vibrant colour throughout the year. This consistent, fresh appearance makes it an excellent choice for adding permanent structure and interest to gardens, particularly in areas where other plants might struggle.
As a ground cover, ‘Green Carpet’ excels in various garden settings. It’s particularly effective in rock gardens, where its spreading habit complements and softens hard landscaping elements. On slopes, it can help with erosion control while creating an attractive, low-maintenance surface. In larger landscapes, it can be used to create a living mulch under trees or to fill in spaces between larger shrubs.
One of the great advantages of ‘Green Carpet’ is its adaptability. Like many junipers, it’s incredibly tough and can thrive in a range of conditions. It’s tolerant of poor soils, drought, and exposure, making it an excellent choice for challenging garden spots. Its low water requirements once established make it a sustainable option for water-wise gardens.
While ‘Green Carpet’ doesn’t produce showy flowers, it can bear small, blue-black berries that are attractive to birds. The dense growth also provides excellent shelter for small wildlife, contributing to the garden’s biodiversity.
In terms of maintenance, ‘Green Carpet’ is a gardener’s dream. It requires very little attention once established, rarely needs pruning, and is generally resistant to pests and diseases. This makes it an ideal choice for busy gardeners or for low-maintenance areas of the garden.
Plant ‘Green Carpet’ in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to poor soils and tolerates drought once established. Water regularly when young, especially during dry spells. Minimal pruning required; trim lightly in late spring if needed to maintain shape. Highly resistant to pests and diseases, making it low-maintenance.
