Taxodium distichum, known as Swamp Cypress or Bald Cypress, is a stunning deciduous conifer. It’s a unique tree that sheds its needles in winter, hence the name ‘Bald’.

This tree is famed for its feathery, light green foliage. In autumn, the needles turn a beautiful russet-bronze before falling. This creates a spectacular seasonal display.

Swamp Cypress has a pyramidal shape when young. As it ages, it develops a broader, flat-topped crown. Its bark is attractive too, with a reddish-brown colour that peels in strips.

In its native habitats, it can grow quite tall. In UK gardens, it typically reaches 15-20 metres over many years. It’s a long-lived tree, often surviving for centuries.

One of its most interesting features is its ability to grow in wet soils. It can even tolerate periodic flooding. This makes it perfect for damp areas where other trees might struggle.

In very wet conditions, it may develop ‘knees’. These are woody projections from the roots that rise above the water or soil surface. They add an intriguing element to the landscape.

Grown from seed at our tree nursery in Euxton, Lancashire.

Caring for Taxodium distichum is relatively easy. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree prefers moist, acidic soils but adapts to various conditions. It can handle wet or occasionally flooded areas. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter if needed, but this tree generally doesn’t require much pruning. Feed annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Swamp Cypress is generally pest and disease resistant. However, keep an eye out for spider mites in dry conditions. In colder areas, provide some winter protection for young trees until they’re well-established.
