Swamp Cypress Tree 20/40cm (P9)

Swamp Cypress – Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer from the river swamps and bayous of the south-eastern United States, and one of the few conifers that drops its needles each autumn. This young specimen is supplied at 20/40cm in a P9 pot, a practical starter size for anyone planting a long-term feature tree, a wet corner of the garden or a pond-side planting scheme.

The foliage is the main attraction. Soft, feathery needles around 1-2cm long are arranged in two neat ranks along slender shoots, emerging a fresh yellow-green in spring and deepening to mid-green through summer. In October and November the whole canopy turns foxy orange, russet and coppery brown before the shoots fall with the needles still attached, leaving a clean, conical winter silhouette. Mature trunks develop fibrous, reddish-brown bark that peels in vertical strips, and trees grown in permanently wet ground often produce the curious woody “knees” that rise from the roots around the base.

Few trees are as tolerant of waterlogged soil. Swamp Cypress will grow happily in ground that floods seasonally, on the margins of ponds and lakes, or beside slow streams where most conifers would fail. It is equally content in ordinary garden soil that does not dry out badly, which makes it far more versatile than its name suggests. The narrow, upright habit when young means it takes up little lateral space for many years, and it is wind-firm, pollution-tolerant and rarely troubled by pests or diseases.

Use it as a specimen on a damp lawn, as a vertical accent in a large mixed border, or in a group of three for a bold reflection beside water. The autumn colour pairs well with willow, dogwood and birch in a wet-garden planting.

Care Guide

Plant between autumn and early spring while the tree is dormant, choosing a position in full sun or very light shade and sheltered from harsh, drying easterly winds. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper, loosen the sides, and plant at the same depth the tree sat in its pot. Firm gently and water in thoroughly.

Swamp Cypress thrives in moist to wet soil and tolerates acid, neutral and mildly alkaline conditions, though it may show yellowing on thin chalk. In the British climate, young trees need watering through dry spells in their first three summers, particularly on free-draining ground. A 7cm mulch of composted bark or leaf mould, kept clear of the trunk, conserves moisture and suppresses weeds.

Feed in March with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if growth seems slow; established trees in damp soil rarely need feeding. Stake small specimens on exposed sites for the first two years, checking ties annually.

Pruning is seldom necessary. Remove any crossing, damaged or competing leading shoots in late winter to maintain a single straight leader. The tree is fully hardy throughout Britain and needs no winter protection.
