Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’ is a captivating evergreen shrub that adds a touch of silvery-blue elegance to any landscape. This low-growing cultivar of the Flaky Juniper is prized for its striking foliage colour and spreading habit, creating a dense, carpet-like mat that can reach 30-40 cm in height and spread up to 2 meters wide.

The needle-like leaves are arranged in tight whorls along flexible branches, giving the plant a soft, textured appearance that contrasts beautifully with other garden elements. ‘Blue Carpet’ is particularly valued for its versatility in the garden, excelling as a ground cover on slopes, in rock gardens, or as a foreground planting in mixed borders. Its hardy nature and drought tolerance make it an excellent choice for challenging areas where other plants might struggle, including poor or rocky soils. This juniper also plays a crucial role in erosion control on banks and slopes.

The year-round silvery-blue colour adds a cool, soothing element to garden designs, creating visual interest even in winter when other plants may be dormant. As it matures, ‘Blue Carpet’ develops a gently undulating form that mimics the natural contours of the landscape, making it an ideal choice for creating a naturalistic garden aesthetic. Whether used to cover large areas, soften hard edges of pathways, or cascade over walls, Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’ offers UK gardeners a low-maintenance, visually stunning solution for a wide range of landscape applications.

Cultural Requirements
Junipers, in general, are quite hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils. ‘Blue Carpet’ would likely thrive best in full sun to bring out its blue hue, but it’s also adaptable to partial shade. Regular watering during its initial years will benefit its growth, but mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant.

Maintenance
Junipers are relatively low maintenance. They may need occasional pruning if a specific shape or size is desired, but ‘Blue Carpet’, with its natural upright form, often requires minimal intervention.

Hardiness
Juniperus squamata and its cultivars are generally hardy, able to withstand cold temperatures – down to -20C and a variety of environmental conditions.

Juniper has been declining in the UK – here’s your chance to support a British native species in need of help.
