The Flaky Juniper ‘Tropical Blue’, also known as Juniperus squamata ‘Tropical Blue’, is a stunning evergreen conifer that adds a splash of colour to any garden. This slow-growing variety forms a compact, upright shape, making it ideal for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger spaces. Its name comes from the striking blue-green needles that create a tropical feel, even in cooler UK climates.

‘Tropical Blue’ is a fantastic choice for rock gardens, mixed borders, or as a standalone specimen. Its compact size means it won’t overpower your garden, while its evergreen nature ensures year-round interest. This juniper variety is particularly eye-catching when planted alongside plants with contrasting foliage colours.

Flaky Juniper is native to the Himalayas and was introduced to Western gardens in the 19th century. The ‘Tropical Blue’ cultivar is a more recent addition, prized for its vibrant colour and garden-friendly size.

This juniper is hardy and adaptable, thriving in UK gardens. It’s resistant to many pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. The dense foliage provides shelter for small birds and insects, boosting your garden’s biodiversity.

As it matures, ‘Tropical Blue’ develops an attractive conical shape that adds structure to your garden. Its slow growth rate means it will maintain its compact form for many years with minimal pruning required.

Flaky Juniper ‘Tropical Blue’ is easy to care for. Plant it in well-drained soil in a sunny position. It tolerates a range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can shape it lightly in late winter if desired. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. This juniper is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels.
