Natural Germination: Sweet Gum seeds require cold stratification to germinate. Naturally, this occurs as seeds overwinter in the soil, experiencing cold, moist conditions essential for breaking dormancy.
Artificial Stratification: To replicate this process, mix the seeds with moist sand and store them in a refrigerator for 1-2 months at temperatures of 1-5°C. After stratification, plant the seeds in a well-draining soil mix. Maintain a consistent moisture level and a temperature around 20°C. Germination usually occurs within 4-6 weeks.
This approach ensures your Sweet Gum seeds are well-prepared for successful germination and growth, creating a robust foundation for your future trees.
