The Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as the Multi-stem Sweet Gum, presents an intriguing variation on the traditional Sweet Gum tree. This distinctive cultivar is characterized by its multiple trunks, which emerge either directly from the base or just above it, creating a captivating architectural element in landscapes.
The tree’s multi-stemmed structure enhances its visual appeal, particularly during winter months when its unique form is most prominent. As each trunk matures, it develops the species’ signature corky bark, forming an intricate pattern that’s visually striking even from afar.
During spring and summer, the multiple stems support a wide, rounded canopy of star-shaped foliage. This fuller silhouette not only provides excellent screening but also creates areas of dappled shade, ideal for establishing secluded spots in the garden.
Autumn brings a spectacular display as the Multi-stem Sweet Gum’s leaves transform into a vivid palette of purple, red, orange, and yellow hues, often simultaneously on a single tree. This colourful metamorphosis is particularly impressive when spread across the multiple trunks.
Typically, the multi-stemmed variety remains somewhat more compact than its single-trunk counterpart, making it well-suited for medium-sized outdoor spaces. It’s an ideal choice for gardeners seeking the Sweet Gum’s beauty in a more sculptural, space-efficient form.
The Sweet Gum Tree is relatively easy to care for and adapts well to various conditions in UK gardens. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate partial shade and a range of soil types. When planting, ensure the site has enough space for the tree to reach its full size. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you need to remove dead or crossing branches, which is best done in late winter or early spring.
