Malus ‘Golden Hornet’ is a jewel of a tree that offers a spectacular show through all four seasons. In spring, this compact crab apple bursts into life with a profusion of white blossom tinged with pink. The flowers cover the tree, creating a cloud-like effect that’s simply breathtaking. They’re also a magnet for bees and other pollinators, filling your garden with the gentle hum of wildlife.

As the flowers fade, the tree’s small, oval leaves provide a lush green backdrop for the developing fruits. By late summer, these fruits start to ripen, turning a bright, eye-catching yellow. The fruits are small, about the size of a cherry, but what they lack in size they make up for in quantity. The tree can be absolutely laden with them, creating the impression of a tree hung with golden ornaments.

One of the best features of ‘Golden Hornet’ is how long the fruits persist. They hang on the tree well into winter, often staying until the new year. This provides vital food for birds during the lean winter months, and a splash of colour in the garden when most other plants are dormant.

The tree itself is compact, typically growing to about 4-6 metres tall and wide over 10 years. This makes it perfect for smaller gardens or urban spaces where larger trees might be impractical. Its naturally rounded crown requires little pruning to maintain a pleasing shape.

In autumn, the leaves turn attractive shades of yellow and orange before falling, adding another season of interest. Even in winter, the tree’s graceful branching structure and persistent fruits make it a standout feature in the garden.

‘Golden Hornet’ is more than just a pretty face. Its flowers provide early nectar for pollinators, its fruits feed birds, and its dense growth offers nesting sites. It’s also great for humans – the fruits can be used to make delicious crab apple jelly.

Whether you’re looking for a small ornamental tree, a wildlife-friendly addition to your garden, or simply a plant that offers year-round interest, Malus ‘Golden Hornet’ is an excellent choice. It’s a tree that keeps on giving, bringing beauty and life to UK gardens in every season.

Plant ‘Golden Hornet’ in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Water regularly when young, but it’s fairly drought-tolerant once established. Prune in winter to maintain shape. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. It’s generally disease-resistant but watch for apple scab in wet years. No need for frost protection as it’s fully hardy in the UK.

Spring – Bare trunk just coming into bud, possibly some flowers
Summer – Fully leafed tree.
Autumn – Dying / brown foliage, fruit.
Winter – Bare trunk, no leaves.
