The Oriental Spruce ‘Skylands’ is a striking golden-needled conifer that brings year-round brilliance to gardens. This exceptional cultivar of Picea orientalis stands out with its bright yellow-gold new growth in spring, which maintains impressive colour through summer before deepening to chartreuse in winter.

‘Skylands’ forms a naturally pyramidal shape with elegant, tiered branches that sweep gracefully downward at their tips. The needles are particularly short and neat compared to other spruces, giving the tree a refined, almost formal appearance. Current size of 20/40cm represents a young specimen, perfect for establishing in gardens.

This conifer performs best in full sun, which enhances its golden colouration, though it will tolerate partial shade. Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. While adaptable to most soil types, it dislikes waterlogged conditions. In exposed sites, consider providing wind protection during establishment.

For optimal growth in British gardens, water regularly during the first growing season to develop a strong root system. Once established, ‘Skylands’ shows good drought tolerance. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring if growth seems slow. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any damaged branches in late winter.

‘Skylands’ shows excellent cold hardiness and adapts well to British winters. It’s particularly valuable for adding structure and winter interest to gardens, with its golden needles providing a stunning contrast against darker evergreens or winter skies.
