Picea pungens ‘Super Blue’, a cultivar of the Colorado blue spruce, is a true showstopper in the world of ornamental conifers. This tree earns its name with its exceptionally intense steel-blue needles, which are more vivid and consistent in colour than many other blue spruce varieties.
The ‘Super Blue’ cultivar is prized for its compact, dense growth habit. It naturally forms a perfect conical shape without the need for extensive pruning, making it an ideal low-maintenance specimen tree. While it grows more slowly than the species, it can eventually reach heights of 6-10 metres in UK gardens, though it remains narrow enough to fit into most garden spaces.
The intense blue colour of ‘Super Blue’ is its most striking feature. This isn’t just a summer phenomenon – the steely blue hue persists year-round, providing a constant focal point in the garden. The colour is particularly effective in winter, standing out brilliantly against snow or the muted tones of dormant deciduous plants.
In garden design, ‘Super Blue’ is incredibly versatile. Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller gardens, while its intense colour allows it to hold its own in larger landscapes. It’s excellent for adding vertical interest to borders, as a standalone specimen, or even as an unusual and eye-catching Christmas tree.
The dense branching structure of ‘Super Blue’ offers more than just ornamental value. It provides excellent shelter for birds, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. The thick growth also makes it an effective privacy screen or windbreak when planted in groups.
This cultivar is known for its hardiness and adaptability. It’s resistant to urban pollution, making it a good choice for city gardens. ‘Super Blue’ also shows good resistance to winter burn, a common issue with some blue spruces, ensuring its beautiful colour remains unmarred throughout the year.
These are young trees which will need a year or so to develop their intense blue colours.
