Pieris ‘Forest Flame’ is a true gem for UK gardens, offering a spectacular show of colour all year round. This evergreen shrub is like a living flame, with new growth that changes colour as it matures.

In spring, ‘Forest Flame’ bursts into life with bright red new shoots. These gradually change to pink, then to a soft cream, before finally turning deep green. This colour parade goes on for weeks, giving your garden an ever-changing display. Just as the leaf show is winding down, the plant produces clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers. These look like strings of little lanterns hanging among the leaves.

‘Forest Flame’ typically grows to about 2-4 metres tall and wide over 10-20 years. It’s a moderate grower, making it suitable for mid-sized gardens or large containers. The plant has a naturally rounded shape, which looks great without much pruning.

This Pieris is perfect for adding structure and interest to UK gardens. It works well in shrub borders, woodland gardens, or as a standout feature plant. Its changing colours make it a great focal point, drawing the eye throughout the seasons.

Like other Pieris, ‘Forest Flame’ prefers acidic soil. If your garden has alkaline soil, don’t worry – it grows happily in a pot with ericaceous compost. It’s ideal for shady spots, making it great for brightening up darker corners of the garden.

‘Forest Flame’ is more than just a pretty face. It’s a hit with wildlife too. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the dense growth provides shelter for birds and small animals.

Whether you’re looking to add year-round colour, create a focal point, or bring life to a shady spot, Pieris ‘Forest Flame’ is a fantastic choice. It’s a plant that keeps on giving, with something new to enjoy in every season.

Plant ‘Forest Flame’ in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Water regularly, especially in dry spells. Feed with ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly after flowering if needed. Protect from cold winds and late frosts. In areas with alkaline soil, grow in pots with ericaceous compost. Keep an eye out for vine weevil and leaf spot.
