The Siberian Dogwood is a stunning deciduous shrub that brings vibrant colour to UK gardens, especially in winter. This species, Cornus alba, is famed for its brilliant red stems that shine against the winter landscape, making it a superb choice for gardeners looking to add year-round interest to their outdoor space.
Siberian Dogwood grows at a moderate to fast rate, typically adding about 30-60cm per year. It can reach heights of 2-3 metres over time, with a similar spread, making it suitable for medium to large gardens or as part of a mixed border in smaller spaces.
The shrub’s standout feature is undoubtedly its winter stems. After the leaves fall, the bright red bark is revealed, creating a stunning display that’s particularly effective against snow or when backlit by low winter sun. In spring and summer, the plant is clothed in oval, dark green leaves that turn reddish-purple in autumn, providing additional seasonal interest. Small, creamy-white flowers appear in late spring, followed by white or bluish-white berries in late summer.
Siberian Dogwood is incredibly hardy, living up to its name. It’s well-adapted to cool climates and can handle both full sun and partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including heavy clay. It’s also tolerant of urban conditions, making it a good choice for town gardens.
Gardeners love this shrub for its versatility and year-round interest. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its winter stems will create a focal point. Or plant several to create a colourful hedge or screen. It looks fantastic in both modern and naturalistic garden designs, adding a pop of colour to winter landscapes.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Siberian Dogwood supports a variety of wildlife. Its flowers attract pollinators, while its berries provide food for birds. The dense growth also offers good shelter for small birds and mammals.
Siberian Dogwood is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. To maintain the brightest stem colour, prune hard in early spring before new growth begins. This encourages new, brightly coloured stems to grow. You can also remove a third of the oldest stems each year to maintain the plant’s shape and vigour
