The Aleppo pine – Pinus halepensis is a striking Mediterranean conifer that brings year-round beauty to any garden. This hardy pine grows into an elegant tree with a distinctive umbrella-shaped crown. Its bright green needles stay fresh throughout the year, making it perfect for gardeners who want constant colour. The tree produces attractive reddish-brown cones that add extra interest. Growing your own Aleppo pine from seed is deeply rewarding. You’ll watch it develop from a tiny seedling into a magnificent tree over the years.

This pine thrives in British gardens, especially in southern regions. It loves sunny spots and handles dry conditions brilliantly once established. The tree grows quite quickly in its early years, reaching about 15-20 metres when mature. Its open, airy crown creates dappled shade underneath. This makes it ideal for underplanting with Mediterranean herbs or drought-tolerant flowers.

The Aleppo pine has been grown around the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Ancient civilisations valued it for resin and timber. The tree gets its common names from the Syrian city of Aleppo and Jerusalem, where it grows naturally.

Each packet contains fresh, viable seeds ready for sowing. Starting trees from seed costs much less than buying young plants. You also get the satisfaction of nurturing your tree from the very beginning. The Aleppo pine makes a superb specimen tree for larger gardens. It also works well as a windbreak or screening plant. Its tolerance of coastal conditions makes it perfect for seaside gardens too.

The tree attracts wildlife throughout the year. Birds love nesting in its branches and feeding on the seeds. Its evergreen nature provides shelter for creatures even in winter. By growing this pine, you’re creating a valuable habitat for local wildlife.

Natural Germination: Aleppo pine seeds can be sown directly outdoors in autumn for natural stratification over winter. This mimics their Mediterranean habitat where seeds fall in autumn and germinate in spring where the weather isn’t too cold.

Artificial Stratification:  Alternatively, soak seeds in cold water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat. Sow in well-draining compost at 15-20°C for best results.
