The Dwarf Mountain Pine ‘Mops’ – Pinus mugo ‘Mops’ is a charming, compact evergreen conifer that forms a dense, rounded mound of rich green needles. This slow-growing cultivar is particularly valued for its neat, mushroom-like shape and consistent form, making it perfect for small gardens, rockeries, and container planting.
The short, dark green needles grow in pairs and maintain excellent colour throughout the year. In spring, fresh bright green growth emerges, creating an attractive contrast against the mature foliage. While the parent species can become quite large, ‘Mops’ remains notably compact, living up to its name with a neat, mop-headed appearance.
This hardy conifer thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to various soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It shows excellent tolerance to exposed conditions, coastal gardens, and urban pollution, making it a versatile choice for challenging garden locations.
Perfect for alpine gardens, gravel gardens, and contemporary minimalist designs, ‘Mops’ provides year-round structure and interest. It combines beautifully with heathers, small flowering perennials, and other dwarf conifers.
