The Austrian Pine is a robust and handsome evergreen tree that brings drama and structure to gardens. Its dark green needles grow in pairs and create a dense, rich canopy that looks good all year round. The bark is particularly attractive, developing deep grey fissures that add winter interest. Young trees have a pyramidal shape, becoming broader and more dome-like with age. Though it can grow quite large over many years, it’s fairly slow-growing in its early years, making it manageable in larger gardens. The needles are long and stiff, creating wonderful textures and movement in the breeze.
Birds love to nest in its dense branches, making it brilliant for wildlife gardens. In winter, its strong form stands out beautifully against grey skies, while providing shelter from cold winds. This pine also holds its lower branches well, making it useful for screening.
The Austrian Pine is one of the easiest pines to grow in British gardens. It’s very adaptable and will grow in most soils, including chalk, though it prefers well-drained conditions. Plant in full sun for the best results. Once established, it’s very drought tolerant and needs little attention. Young trees benefit from staking in windy sites. There’s no need for regular pruning – it naturally maintains its shape. A thick mulch around the base in spring helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. It copes well with pollution, making it suitable for town gardens.
