The Japanese White Pine ‘Blue Lou’ is a stunning dwarf evergreen that brings year-round beauty to gardens. Its compact, mounding shape is perfect for smaller spaces, growing slowly into a dense, rounded form. The needles are a striking light blue-green, creating a soft, cloud-like appearance that stands out beautifully against darker garden plants. Each bundle contains five short needles that twist slightly, giving the plant a lovely texture. Growing only about 1 metre tall and wide over 10 years, this pine is ideal for rock gardens, raised beds, or containers. It’s a brilliant choice if you want something that looks good all year without needing much fuss. The blue-tinged needles look particularly lovely when caught by winter frost or morning dew.

This special variety was chosen for its compact size and beautiful blue colour, making it much more suitable for gardens than its larger wild cousins.

‘Blue Lou’ is quite straightforward to grow in British gardens. Plant it in full sun to get the best blue colour in the needles, though it will cope with light shade. The soil should be well-drained – adding grit to heavy clay soils helps. Once established, it’s fairly drought tolerant but water regularly in the first year. There’s no need for regular pruning, though you can remove any dead or damaged branches in early spring. A yearly feed with a general fertiliser in spring will keep it happy.
