The Negishi Japanese White Pine is a charming dwarf conifer that brings the beauty of Japanese gardens to your outdoor space. This slow-growing pine forms a compact, dome-shaped mound that gradually spreads wider than tall. The soft blue-green needles grow in neat bundles of five, creating a delightfully textured appearance. Each spring, fresh candles of new growth emerge in a lighter shade, making a lovely contrast with the mature foliage. As the tree ages, it develops an appealing irregular shape that looks perfectly at home in both traditional and modern gardens. It’s an ideal choice for smaller spaces, rock gardens, or containers. The Negishi was found in Japan and has been treasured in gardens there for generations.

Plant your Negishi Pine in a sunny or partially shaded spot in well-drained soil. While it’s not fussy about soil type, good drainage is essential. Water regularly in the first growing season, then only during dry spells once established. In spring, you can pinch out about half of the new candles to keep growth compact and encourage a denser habit. A yearly feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring is helpful, but don’t overdo it. This pine doesn’t need regular pruning – just remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter.
