The Yellowhorn Xanthoceras sorbiflorium is a rare and beautiful flowering shrub that brings a touch of the exotic to British gardens. This unusual plant produces clusters of white flowers with striking yellow and red centres in late spring. The blooms look rather like horse chestnut flowers but are much more delicate and pretty.
The flowers appear before or with the bright green leaves, creating a stunning display. Each stem carries up to 20 flowers, making quite a show in May. The leaves are made up of smaller leaflets, giving an almost fern-like appearance that stays fresh and green all summer.
Though not widely known in British gardens, this tough plant copes well with our weather. It grows as a large shrub or small tree, reaching about 4-5 metres over time. The neat shape makes it perfect for smaller spaces or as a focal point.
In autumn, the plant produces interesting fruits that look a bit like walnuts. The green leaves often turn butter yellow before falling. This is a plant that gives you something to look at in every season.
Plant your Yellowhorn in a sheltered, sunny spot in well-drained soil. While hardy, it appreciates protection from harsh winds. The soil should be fertile but not too rich – average garden soil suits it perfectly. Water regularly in the first few years until established, especially during dry spells. A spring feed with general purpose fertiliser and a mulch helps keep it healthy. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any dead or crossing branches in late winter.
