The Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’ is a miniature marvel in the world of conifers. This compact cultivar of Pinus parviflora captures the essence of Japanese garden design in a small, manageable package. Its rounded, globe-like form is a testament to careful breeding, resulting in a tree that rarely exceeds 2 metres in height even after a decade of growth. The ‘Tempelhof’ variety is distinguished by its striking blue-green needles, which grow in clusters of five, creating a soft, almost cloud-like texture. This colouration remains vibrant throughout the year, providing constant interest in the garden. In spring, small brown cones emerge, adding another layer of visual appeal. Named after Berlin’s historic airport, ‘Tempelhof’ reflects the structured, well-planned nature of its namesake.

This pine is an ideal choice for rock gardens, as a focal point in small spaces, or even in a large container on a patio. Its slow growth rate and natural compact shape mean it requires minimal pruning, making it a low-maintenance option for busy gardeners or those new to growing conifers.

Japanese White Pine ‘Tempelhof’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. When planting, ensure good drainage, as this pine doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This tree is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. To maintain its compact shape, you can pinch back new growth in spring. ‘Tempelhof’ is generally pest and disease resistant, but keep an eye out for pine needle scale or spider mites. Protect from harsh winds, especially in winter. With proper care, this beautiful pine can be a long-lasting feature in your garden.
