Mexican Weeping Pine 20/40cm (P9)

Pinus patula

£13.55

The Mexican Weeping Pine needs careful placement in UK gardens. Choose a sheltered spot with full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly when young to establish deep roots. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Protect from harsh winds and severe frost, especially when young. No regular pruning is needed, but remove any dead or damaged branches.

The Mexican Weeping Pine, known scientifically as Pinus patula, is a graceful and unique conifer that can bring a touch of exotic beauty to UK gardens. Native to the mountains of Mexico, this pine is known for its distinctive drooping needles, which give it a soft, weeping appearance unlike any other pine.

This tree is prized for its ornamental value, with long, slender needles that hang down in cascading clusters. The needles are a bright, fresh green colour, creating a lively and eye-catching presence in the garden. In spring, new growth emerges in a lighter, almost lime-green shade, adding an extra dimension of colour.

Mexican Weeping Pines have a naturally conical shape when young, gradually developing a more open, umbrella-like crown as they mature. This elegant form makes them an excellent specimen tree or focal point in larger gardens. Their unique appearance can create a striking contrast when planted alongside other conifers or evergreens.

While they can grow quite tall in their native habitat, Mexican Weeping Pines tend to stay more compact in UK conditions, making them manageable for many gardens. They’re relatively fast-growing for a pine, so you can enjoy their developing form within a few years of planting.

In addition to their ornamental value, these pines can provide shelter for birds and other wildlife. Their dense, drooping foliage creates protected spaces that are ideal for nesting. The cones, which are small and oval-shaped, can also be attractive to wildlife.

Winter Care
While Pinus patula is more frost hardy than many tropical pines, it may not fare well in the more harsh winter climates of the UK. If a particularly cold winter is forecasted, consider protecting your tree with a horticultural fleece, especially when the tree is young and not yet well established.

Protect from frost for as many years as possible.
