The Maritime Pine, or Pinus pinaster, is a majestic evergreen tree that brings a touch of Mediterranean charm to gardens and coastal landscapes. This pine is known for its distinctive appearance, featuring a broad, umbrella-like canopy atop a tall, straight trunk. The bark is particularly striking, developing deep fissures and a rich, reddish-brown colour as the tree matures. Its needles are long, stiff, and dark green, growing in pairs and creating a dense, textural canopy that provides year-round interest and shelter.

Maritime Pine typically grows to heights of 20-30 metres in cultivation, though it can reach up to 40 metres in its native habitat. It’s a relatively fast-growing tree for a pine, which means you can enjoy its impressive stature within a reasonable timeframe. The tree’s spreading branches can create a canopy spanning 6-10 metres wide, making it an excellent choice for larger gardens or as a striking focal point in parks and open spaces.

One of the most notable features of this pine is its cones. They are large, glossy, and can reach up to 20 cm in length, adding visual interest throughout the year. These cones often remain on the tree for several years, contributing to its ornamental value. The tree also produces a fragrant resin, which adds to its sensory appeal in the garden.

Gardeners often choose the Maritime Pine for its ornamental value and its ability to thrive in challenging conditions, particularly in coastal areas. It’s highly tolerant of salt spray and strong winds, making it an ideal choice for seaside gardens. Once established, it’s also quite drought-tolerant, which can be beneficial in areas with water restrictions or in low-maintenance landscapes.

This pine works well in various garden settings, particularly in coastal or Mediterranean-style gardens. It can serve as a magnificent specimen tree, create a natural windbreak, or act as a backdrop to other plantings. Its tolerance of poor, sandy soils makes it valuable for stabilising dunes or slopes in coastal areas.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate that the Maritime Pine can provide shelter and nesting sites for birds. The seeds in the cones are also a food source for various wildlife, including squirrels and some bird species.

If you’re after a tree that looks good all year and can handle tough conditions, the Maritime Pine is an excellent choice. It maintains its striking appearance through all seasons, providing constant greenery, texture, and structure in your landscape.

Caring for a Maritime Pine is relatively straightforward, especially once established. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but can adapt to various soil types, including poor, sandy soils. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first few years. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring is enough if the soil is particularly poor. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of needle browning or dieback, which could indicate stress or disease. The Maritime Pine is hardy in most parts of Britain but may appreciate some shelter from strong winds in very exposed inland sites.

Our deep cell trays are a smart strategy for cultivating trees with strong and deep root systems. This leads to healthier and more resilient trees that are better prepared for transplantation and long-term growth in your garden.

Extended Planting Season

Cell grown trees offer a significantly broader planting window, allowing for planting almost year-round in certain conditions. This flexibility ensures easier scheduling and enhances tree establishment due to warmer soil and more favourable weather conditions, extending beyond the traditional planting season.

Robust Root System

The roots of cell grown trees are encased and safeguarded within compost, preventing the young fibrous roots from drying out or sustaining damage. This intact root system, with its uniform and manageable shape, facilitates straightforward planting.

Convenient Storage

These trees can be effortlessly stored outdoors before planting, eliminating the need for labour-intensive temporary planting (heeling in) or costly refrigerated storage.

Ease of Handling and Planting

The extended shelf life of cell grown trees means there’s no immediate urgency to plant. Their user-friendly root system increases the likelihood of successful planting. These characteristics make them ideal for planting by novices or volunteers.

High Survival Rate

The intact root system of cell grown trees significantly boosts their chances of successful establishment, virtually removing the need for expensive replanting (beating up).

Cost-Effectiveness

While the initial purchase price of cell grown trees may be slightly higher than bare-root stock for some species, the long-term savings achieved by reducing the need for replacing failed transplants than compensates for the initial minor cost difference.

No plastic waste

Trees are often supplied plastic pots that are difficult to recycle, especially the black pots. We rely on our customers to reuse these where possible, however these cell grown trees do not have plastic pots – saving any reuse & recycling concerns.
