Weymouth Pine – Pinus strobus is a magnificent large conifer from eastern North America, prized for its soft blue-green needles in bundles of five and elegant, resinous cones up to 20cm long. Growing easily from seed with cold stratification, it is exceptionally hardy (RHS H7) and thrives in well-drained soils across British gardens.

Weymouth Pine – Pinus strobus is one of North America’s most majestic native conifers, and growing one from seed is a deeply rewarding project for any patient gardener. Known across its native range as the Eastern White Pine, this is a tree of genuine stature — conical and graceful in youth, before broadening into a magnificent, wide-crowned specimen with age. The soft, blue-green needles, borne in distinctive bundles of five and reaching up to 15cm long, give the foliage a feathery, almost airy quality quite unlike the stiff needles of most common pines. Slender, resinous cones up to 20cm long hang elegantly from the branches, releasing their seeds in the second year of development.
Growing Weymouth Pine from seed is entirely achievable at home. Seeds benefit from cold stratification to mimic winter conditions — wrap them in damp vermiculite or compost in a sealed bag and place in the fridge for four to six weeks before sowing. Sow into individual deep pots or root trainers filled with a free-draining, slightly acidic compost mix. Place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse in early spring, where germination typically occurs within three to four weeks as temperatures begin to rise. Seedlings are vigorous once established, though they resent waterlogging at every stage of growth.

Natural Germination: Pinus strobus seeds typically benefit from a period of cold stratification to mimic winter conditions. Sowing the seeds outdoors in autumn allows them to undergo natural stratification during the winter, preparing them for germination in spring.
Artificial Stratification: For artificial stratification, mix the seeds with moist sand and store them in a refrigerator at 2-5°C for about 60-90 days. This simulates the winter chill, breaking the dormancy of the seeds. After this period, sow the seeds in a warm environment, ideally at a temperature of 18-22°C, to encourage germination.

We are a small family business based in Euxton, West Lancashire. We specialise in the supply of trees, shrubs both bare root & cell grown. Much of our stock is grown directly on site from seed or cuttings. Other stock is all UK sourced where possible.
