This cultivar of Pinus sylvestris is famed for its striking yellow needles, making it a brilliant choice for gardeners looking to add year-round interest and a touch of warmth to their outdoor space.

‘Gold Coin’ grows at a slow to moderate rate, typically adding about 15-20cm per year. It can reach heights of 3-5 metres over time, with a broad, pyramidal shape that adds structure to the garden. This compact form makes it suitable for small to medium-sized gardens or as a stunning specimen tree in larger landscapes.

The tree’s standout feature is its foliage. The needles emerge a bright, golden-yellow in spring, creating a striking contrast against other green plants. This colour persists throughout the year, becoming slightly deeper and more intense in winter, providing constant interest in the garden. The twisted nature of the needles adds to its ornamental value, catching the light beautifully.

‘Gold Coin’ is hardier than its golden appearance might suggest. It’s well-adapted to the UK climate and can handle both full sun and partial shade, although it develops the best colour in full sun. It prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including poor and sandy soils. It’s also relatively tolerant of urban conditions and coastal environments, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.

Perfect planted in the garden or as a bonsai subject.
