The Oriental Plane is a magnificent deciduous tree that has graced gardens and parklands for centuries, revered for its architectural presence and remarkable longevity. This specimen, supplied at 60/80cm, represents a young plant ready to establish in your garden and develop into one of the most impressive shade trees available. With its distinctive flaking bark that creates a beautiful patchwork of cream, grey, and olive-green, this tree offers year-round visual interest that only improves with age.

The foliage of Platanus orientalis is particularly striking, with deeply lobed leaves that can reach up to 20cm across. These bright green leaves emerge fresh and vibrant in spring, providing dense canopy coverage throughout summer before turning warm golden-yellow tones in autumn. The bark is perhaps the tree’s most celebrated feature, peeling away in irregular plates to reveal the smooth, pale underlayers beneath – a characteristic that becomes increasingly pronounced as the tree matures.

This species is exceptionally well-suited to the British climate, demonstrating remarkable tolerance to urban pollution, compacted soils, and varying moisture levels. It thrives in full sun positions and prefers deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, though it adapts admirably to most soil types provided they are well-drained. The Oriental Plane is particularly valuable for large gardens, estates, and parkland settings where it has space to develop its broad, spreading crown.

Planting should be undertaken between November and March when the tree is dormant. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate plenty of organic matter. Stake young trees for the first two growing seasons to ensure stability whilst the root system establishes. Water thoroughly during dry periods for the first three years, applying a generous mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Regular watering is essential during establishment, particularly throughout the first two summers. Once established, the Oriental Plane becomes remarkably drought-tolerant, though it performs best with consistent moisture. Feed annually in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Pruning requirements are minimal – simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches during late winter whilst the tree is dormant. Avoid pruning during the growing season as this can lead to bleeding.

The Oriental Plane is remarkably resistant to pests and diseases, though it can occasionally be affected by plane anthracnose in particularly wet springs. This rarely causes long-term damage. The tree’s robust constitution and adaptability make it an excellent choice for creating a lasting legacy in your garden, providing shade, structure, and beauty for generations to come.
