Pomegranate Trees
Punica granatum
Pomegranate trees are eye-catching and exotic additions to UK gardens. They have bright green leaves and showy orange-red flowers that bloom in late spring. These trees can grow up to 5 metres tall but often stay smaller in the UK climate.
The fruit is round with a thick, red skin. Inside, you’ll find juicy seeds full of tangy flavour. These seeds, called arils, are packed with vitamin C. Even if your tree doesn’t fruit, it’s still a lovely ornamental plant that brings a touch of the Mediterranean to your garden.
Plant your pomegranate tree in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. A south-facing wall is ideal. Water regularly in summer, but less in winter. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly in late winter to keep its shape. In colder areas, grow in a large pot and move indoors for winter.
Pomegranates are hardy down to -15°C when mature, but young plants need protection from frost.
