The pomegranate is an ancient fruit native to Persia. However, it is UK hardy down to -15Cº when mature, so it’s possible to grow them in the UK. This makes it a fun and unusual choice for British gardeners.

Pomegranate trees are small but eye-catching. They grow to about 3 to 5 metres tall. The leaves are bright green and glossy. In late spring and summer, the tree puts on a show with its bright orange-red flowers. These blossoms look like little trumpets and really stand out.

The fruit follows the flowers. Pomegranates are round and have a thick, leathery skin. When ripe, they turn a deep red colour. Inside, you’ll find juicy seeds packed with tangy flavour. These seeds, called arils, are the edible part of the fruit.

Growing pomegranates in the UK can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s worth it. They need lots of sun and shelter from cold winds. A spot against a south-facing wall is ideal. In colder areas, you can grow them in large pots. This way, you can move them indoors when it gets frosty.

Pomegranate trees don’t just look good – they’re useful too. The fruit is full of vitamin C and antioxidants. You can eat the seeds fresh, use them in cooking, or make juice. Even if your tree doesn’t fruit, it’s still a lovely ornamental plant.

These trees don’t need much pruning. Just tidy them up in late winter to keep their shape. They’re also fairly drought-tolerant once established, which is good news for gardeners in drier parts of the UK.

Pomegranates have been grown for thousands of years. They appear in many old stories and myths. Growing one in your garden is like having a piece of living history. Plus, they’re a great talking point when friends visit!

With some care and the right spot, you can enjoy the beauty and maybe even the fruit of a pomegranate tree in your UK garden. It’s a rewarding plant that brings a bit of exotic flair to British soil.

Plant pomegranates in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. They do well against a south-facing wall. Water regularly in summer, but reduce watering in winter. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly in late winter to keep shape. In colder areas, grow in large pots and move indoors for winter.

This is a young plant and will require some protection in Autumn and Winter from the cold and wet, especially frost.
