Japanese Cherry Blossom Tree – Prunus serrulata is one of the most recognisable flowering trees in cultivation, grown for the soft clouds of blossom that appear in mid to late spring. This young specimen is supplied at 100/120cm tall, giving you an affordable, easily handled plant that can be grown on in a nursery bed, potted up for a season, or planted straight into its final position.

The flowers open from tight pink buds along bare or barely-leafed branches, creating a display that lasts several weeks before the petals drift down in the familiar spring “snowfall”. Once the blooms fade, the leaves unfurl with a bronze or coppery flush, settle to a fresh mid-green through summer, then colour to amber, orange and red in autumn. The bark is another feature worth noting: smooth, glossy and reddish-brown, marked with horizontal lenticel bands that catch the low winter light once the canopy has dropped.

Japanese cherries earn their place as specimen trees on a lawn, as a focal point at the end of a border, or spaced along a drive where the spring display can be appreciated at a distance. The branching becomes wide and spreading with maturity, so allow room for the canopy to develop rather than crowding it against a boundary. Pollinators appreciate the early nectar, and the light, dappled shade cast in summer suits underplanting with spring bulbs, hardy geraniums or cyclamen.

Care Guide

Plant between autumn and early spring while the tree is dormant, choosing a position in full sun or light shade with shelter from strong, drying winds. Any reasonable garden soil suits, provided it drains freely; cherries dislike waterlogging, so improve heavy clay with grit and well-rotted organic matter, or plant on a slight mound. Dig a hole twice the width of the root system but no deeper, keeping the union of roots and stem level with the surrounding soil.

Water regularly during the first two or three growing seasons, especially through dry spells from May to September, as young trees establish slowly. A 5/8cm mulch of bark or garden compost applied each spring will conserve moisture and suppress competing grass, but keep it clear of the trunk. Feed in early spring with a balanced general fertiliser; avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which encourage soft growth at the expense of flowers.

Prune only when necessary and always in midsummer, when the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker infection is lowest. Take out dead, damaged or crossing branches, along with any suckers coming up from the base. Never prune in winter. A stake and tree tie will steady a young plant for the first two seasons in exposed gardens; check ties annually and loosen them as the trunk thickens.

Fully hardy across the British climate, Prunus serrulata tolerates frost well, though a late cold snap can occasionally brown open blossom without harming the tree itself.

Great for wildlife Trees RHS Award of Garden Merit

Our unique tall 9cm pots is a smart strategy for cultivating trees with strong and deep root systems. This practice can lead to healthier and more resilient trees that are better prepared for transplantation and long-term growth in your UK garden.

Promoting Deep Root Development with Tall 9cm Pots:

1. Enhanced Root Growth: Using tall pots, such as 9cm pots, encourages trees to develop a deeper and more extensive root system. The added height of the pot allows the tree’s roots to grow downward, seeking nutrients and water in the lower soil layers.

2. Reduced Root Circling: Traditional, shallower pots can sometimes lead to root circling, where the roots grow in a circular pattern around the pot’s base. This can restrict the tree’s ability to access essential resources. Tall pots mitigate this issue, as roots are less likely to encounter physical barriers that encourage circling.

3. Improved Stability: The additional depth provided by tall pots offers improved stability for young trees. It allows for better anchoring and support, which is particularly important during periods of strong winds or inclement weather.

4. Better Soil Temperature Regulation: Tall pots offer improved insulation for the root system. This can help maintain more stable soil temperatures, protecting the roots from extreme heat or cold. This is crucial for healthy root development, especially in the unpredictable UK climate.

5. Reduced Transplant Shock: When it’s time to transplant a tree from a tall pot into the ground, the deeper root system developed in the tall pot can reduce transplant shock. The tree is better equipped to establish itself in its new environment.

6. Versatility: Tall pots are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of tree species. They are particularly useful for growing trees that have a taproot, which naturally grows deeper.
