Japanese Cherry Blossom Tree 40/60cm (P9)

Prunus serrulata

£15.55

The national flower of Japan, the cherry blossom – or Sakura, represents a time of renewal and optimism. The pops of pink mark the ending of winter and signify the beginning of spring. Due to their quick blooming season, cherry blossoms also symbolize the transience of life, a major theme in Buddhism.

Grow your own Japanese Cherry Blossom Tree – Sakura. Although the Cherry Blossom is a collection of many Prunus species, these seeds are from the Prunus serrulata tree.

The Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, is a captivating ornamental tree that has become a beloved fixture in UK gardens. Renowned for its breathtaking spring display, this tree bursts into life with a profusion of delicate pink or white blossoms, typically appearing in April or May. The flowers, often double or semi-double, create a cloud-like effect that can transform any landscape into a picturesque scene reminiscent of Japanese gardens.

Native to Japan, China, and Korea, Prunus serrulata has been cultivated for centuries and has numerous cultivars, each with its own unique characteristics. These trees generally reach a height of 4-8 meters, making them suitable for both small and large gardens. Their spreading canopy provides dappled shade in summer, while their autumn foliage offers a second season of interest with leaves turning attractive shades of orange and red.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Japanese cherry trees play a vital role in supporting local wildlife. The blossoms attract early pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while birds may nest in the branches and feed on the small fruits that follow the flowers. In UK gardens, these trees are often used as stunning focal points, planted in groups for maximum impact, or incorporated into mixed borders to add structure and seasonal interest.

While the blooming period is relatively short, lasting about two weeks, the impact of a Japanese cherry in full flower is truly unforgettable. Their elegant form and seasonal beauty make them a popular choice for parks, streets, and private gardens across the UK, bringing a touch of Eastern charm to British landscapes.
