The English Oak ‘Pectinata’ – Quercus robur ‘Pectinata’ is a distinctive and architectural form of the native English oak, celebrated for its narrow, deeply cut foliage that sets it apart from the typical broad-leaved oak. This cultivar, sometimes known as the Cut-leaved Oak or Fern-leaved Oak, produces leaves with deeply serrated margins that create an almost feathery appearance, giving the tree an elegant, refined texture throughout the growing season. The foliage emerges in spring with a fresh green hue, maturing to a rich, deep green before turning to warm bronze and russet tones in autumn.
This particular specimen is supplied at 20/40cm in a 2-litre container, making it an ideal size for establishing in gardens where a feature tree with character is desired. Despite its unusual foliage, ‘Pectinata’ retains the robust constitution and longevity associated with English oaks, proving itself adaptable to a wide range of soil types and conditions. The tree develops a strong, upright habit with a well-balanced crown, making it suitable for both specimen planting and incorporation into mixed borders where its textural qualities can be fully appreciated.
As the tree matures, it develops the characteristic fissured bark of native oaks, adding winter interest and providing habitat for wildlife. The finely cut leaves allow dappled light to filter through the canopy, making ‘Pectinata’ particularly valuable in smaller gardens where a full-sized oak might cast too much shade. This cultivar supports a wealth of biodiversity, with the foliage providing food for numerous caterpillar species, while the acorns that develop in maturity offer sustenance for birds and mammals.
The architectural quality of the foliage makes this oak an excellent choice for those seeking a native tree with added ornamental value. It combines the ecological benefits of our native English oak with a more refined aesthetic, bridging the gap between traditional woodland planting and contemporary garden design. The deeply lobed leaves create movement and texture, catching the light beautifully and providing year-round interest.
Care Guide
Plant your English Oak ‘Pectinata’ in a position with full sun or partial shade, ensuring the soil is well-drained. This cultivar tolerates a wide range of soil types, from clay to sandy loam, and thrives in both acidic and alkaline conditions. Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter to aid establishment.
Water regularly during the first two growing seasons, particularly during dry spells, to encourage a deep and extensive root system. Once established, the tree becomes remarkably drought-tolerant, though young specimens benefit from mulching around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a 5-8cm layer of organic mulch in spring, keeping it clear of the trunk.
Pruning is rarely necessary but can be carried out between late autumn and early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid pruning during the growing season when the tree is more susceptible to oak wilt and other diseases. Young trees benefit from formative pruning to establish a strong framework, but mature specimens require minimal intervention.
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growth appears weak, though established oaks generally require little supplementary feeding. The tree is hardy throughout Britain and requires no winter protection once established. Monitor for oak processionary moth in southern regions and report sightings to the appropriate authorities.
