The English Oak stands as the king of native trees. This mighty tree starts life quite quickly but then grows steadily, forming a broad, sturdy crown that will last for generations. The large, wavy-edged leaves create wonderful dappled shade in summer.

In spring, the fresh green leaves appear along with catkins that often go unnoticed. By autumn, the tree produces acorns that squirrels and jays quickly find. The leaves slowly turn golden-brown, often staying on young trees well into winter.

Though it will grow large over many years, a young oak fits nicely into most gardens. The spreading crown provides the perfect habitat for birds, while the trunk and branches support more wildlife than any other native tree.

This is a tree for those who want to leave a lasting mark on their bit of Britain. Young oaks grow faster than many think, putting on about 50cm each year. Their presence adds a sense of history and stability to any garden.

Plant your English Oak where it has room to grow, in any reasonable soil. It copes with most conditions but prefers deep, well-drained earth. Water well in the first couple of growing seasons to help it establish. After that, it needs almost no care – oaks are very self-sufficient. They naturally fight off most problems and grow stronger with age. Simply remove any dead wood in winter if needed.
