This variety of willow is also known for its versatility, being used in floral arrangements and as a striking feature in winter gardens.

Salix gracilistyla ‘Melanostachys’ is relatively easy to grow. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Plant in a location that’s sheltered from strong winds. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, as willows are moisture-loving plants. Prune hard in early spring to encourage new growth and maintain its shape. This also helps produce the most vibrant catkins. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring.
