Scots Pine
Pinus sylvestris
The Scots Pine – Pinus sylvestris stands as Britain’s only native pine species, with several outstanding cultivars offering diverse garden options. While the species develops into a majestic tree with orange-red bark and blue-green needles, selected varieties provide alternatives for different garden situations.
The compact ‘Watereri’ forms a dense, slow-growing rounded bush, ideal for smaller gardens. ‘Gold Coin’ brings year-round interest with its striking golden-yellow winter needles, while ‘Fastigiata’ offers a narrow, columnar form perfect for vertical accent planting. For rock gardens, the dwarf variety ‘Beuvronensis’ creates an attractive low-spreading form.
The species itself develops an unmistakable silhouette with its spreading crown and ascending branches. Young trees maintain a pyramidal shape, while mature specimens develop the characteristic flat-topped crown. The needles, arranged in pairs and measuring 5-7cm, create a fine texture and carry a subtle blue-grey bloom.
This adaptable tree and its cultivars thrive in most conditions, from poor sandy soils to exposed sites. Their natural presence supports abundant wildlife, making them valuable for wildlife gardens.
