The Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ is a charming dwarf form of the mighty redwood, sporting unusual blue-tinted foliage that sets it apart from the standard variety. This compact conifer grows into a neat, rounded shape that’s perfect for smaller gardens. The short, dense branches are covered with attractive blue-green needles that create a soft, appealing texture.
Growing slowly to form a neat mound, this variety typically reaches just 2-3 metres over many years, making it a manageable choice for most gardens. The blue-tinted foliage looks particularly striking in winter light and creates beautiful contrast with other garden plants.
This variety offers all the charm of its giant cousin but in a perfectly scaled-down form. It’s brilliant for adding year-round structure to borders or as a focal point in a rock garden. The blue colouring intensifies during cooler months, bringing welcome colour to the winter garden.
Coast Redwood ‘Adpressa’ is relatively easy to care for in UK gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Pruning is generally not necessary due to its naturally compact form, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring if needed. Watch out for spider mites in dry conditions. Protect young plants from severe frost in their first few winters. With proper care, your ‘Adpressa’ will thrive and provide year-round interest in your garden.
If left unattended, it will form a broadly conical, rather open tree that will be 4 to 6 feet (1.5 – 2m) tall after 10 years. However, if subjected to regular shearing and occasional, ‘Adpressa’ will be a fairly tight, bright white ball.
