The Coast Redwood ‘Silver Ghost’, a cultivar of Sequoia sempervirens, is a truly stunning tree that can bring a touch of magic to your garden. This evergreen conifer is known for its unique silvery-white bark, which creates a ghostly effect that’s sure to catch the eye.

While not as massive as its wild cousins in California, ‘Silver Ghost’ still grows to an impressive height, usually reaching about 20-25 metres tall in UK gardens. It has a conical shape when young, gradually developing a more columnar form as it matures. The soft, feathery needles are arranged in flat sprays, giving the tree a delicate, almost lacy appearance despite its size.

One of the best things about ‘Silver Ghost’ is its year-round interest. The contrast between the silvery-white bark and the green foliage remains striking throughout the seasons, standing out beautifully against other plants in your garden. In winter, when many trees are bare, ‘Silver Ghost’ continues to provide structure and visual appeal.

This tree is a great choice if you want to create a focal point in your garden. Its unusual bark colour and statuesque form make it a natural centrepiece. It’s also brilliant for adding height and vertical interest to your outdoor space.

‘Silver Ghost’ is relatively fast-growing for a conifer, which means you won’t have to wait decades to see results. It’s also quite adaptable to different soil types, though it prefers moist, well-drained conditions.

While it’s a large tree at maturity, ‘Silver Ghost’ can be grown in a large container for several years, making it a good option for smaller gardens or patios. Just remember that it will eventually need to be planted out to reach its full potential.

Coast Redwood ‘Silver Ghost’ prefers a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when the tree is young. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, but generally, these trees are quite resistant to problems
