This Coast redwood variety known as ‘Steel Blue’ is a recent addition to the species, boasting some of the most intensely blue foliage among redwoods. Its blue colouration intensifies as the tree matures. ‘Steel Blue’ grows at a leisurely pace and takes its time establishing a dominant central stem. Gardeners aiming for a tall, upright ‘Steel Blue’ should consider using stakes to promote vertical growth of branches. Sequoia sempervirens –  Coast Redwood ‘Steel Blue’ is a stunning and unique addition to any garden, boasting the most intensely blue foliage among Coast Redwood cultivars. As the tree matures, its blue colouration becomes even more pronounced, creating a striking contrast against other green foliage in the landscape.

One of the main advantages of ‘Steel Blue’ is its slow growth rate, which allows for easy maintenance and shaping. Gardeners can take their time to train this versatile conifer into their desired form, whether it be a tall, upright tree or a low-spreading shrub. To achieve a more vertical growth habit, consider using stakes to guide the branches upward. Alternatively, if a more compact, spreading form is preferred, simply remove any emerging central leaders through selective pruning.

The tightly formed needles of ‘Steel Blue’ create a dense, compact appearance that adds a unique texture to the garden. The foliage is not only visually appealing but also provides a pleasant tactile experience when brushed against.

As a slow-growing conifer, ‘Steel Blue’ is well-suited for smaller gardens or for use as a focal point in larger landscapes. Its striking blue colour and versatile growth habit make it a conversation piece and a true standout in any garden setting.

Currently the bluest Coast Redwood cultivar available.
