The Rowan – Sorbus aucuparia, also known as Mountain Ash, is a charming native tree that offers year-round interest to gardens. In spring, clusters of creamy-white flowers cover the tree, attracting bees and other pollinators. These develop into brilliant orange-red berries by late summer, providing a feast for garden birds well into winter. The delicate, feathery leaves turn stunning shades of red and orange in autumn.

This medium-sized tree has a neat, rounded crown that works brilliantly in both small and large gardens. It’s particularly good for wildlife-friendly spaces, as birds absolutely love the berries. The leaves are made up of smaller leaflets, which create a light, airy canopy that won’t cast heavy shade on your garden.

Rowans are part of our British heritage, traditionally planted near houses for good luck. They’re incredibly tough trees that cope well with most conditions, including exposed sites and higher ground where other trees might struggle.Rowans are easy to grow and will thrive in most soils, though they prefer well-drained conditions. They’re happy in full sun or partial shade and can handle exposed positions. Young trees need regular watering until established, but mature specimens are quite self-sufficient. No regular pruning is needed unless you want to shape the tree. Remove any damaged branches in late winter. A spring mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
