The Japanese Pagoda Tree, Styphnolobium japonicum, is a brilliant choice for UK gardeners with space for a larger tree. Despite its name, this deciduous beauty actually hails from China and has graced British gardens for centuries.
Growing to 12-15 metres tall, it forms a broad, rounded crown that offers lovely dappled shade. Don’t worry about it taking over too quickly though – it’s a slow grower, giving you time to enjoy its development.
The tree’s star feature is its late summer display. Just when other trees have finished flowering, it bursts into bloom with masses of creamy-white, pea-like flowers in long panicles. These frothy clusters are a magnet for bees and other pollinators.
After flowering, slender green pods appear, ripening to brown and persisting into winter. The pinnate leaves, fresh green in spring and summer, turn a soft yellow in autumn before falling.
This tough tree adapts well to most well-drained soils and copes with full sun or partial shade. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant – handy for drier UK regions.
The Japanese Pagoda Tree Styphnolobium japonicum is fairly low-maintenance for UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Water deeply during dry spells, especially when young. Mulch to retain moisture, but keep it away from the trunk. Pruning isn’t necessary, but remove dead or crossing branches in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. This hardy tree is generally pest-resistant, though watch for aphids in summer. It’s tolerant of urban conditions and various soil types, making it a versatile choice for larger gardens.
