The Swamp Cypress ‘Lindsey’s Skyward’ represents a truly revolutionary development in deciduous conifers, offering gardeners an architectural marvel that defies the traditional spreading form of its species. This extraordinary cultivar showcases a remarkably upright branch habit that creates a living column of exceptional symmetry and grace. Unlike every other bald cypress variety that has come before it, ‘Lindsey’s Skyward’ features branches that ascend stiffly and tightly against the main trunk, forming a deciduous conifer with a completely unique silhouette that commands attention throughout every season.
Standing at 150-175cm in this generous 55-litre container, your specimen arrives at an impressive size that delivers instant impact whilst still offering years of vertical development ahead. The architectural form is already well-established, with those characteristic ascending branches creating a narrow, columnar profile that makes this cultivar perfect for gardens where space is at a premium or where a strong vertical accent is desired. This is a plant that draws the eye skyward, living up to its evocative name with every passing season.
The foliage presents a captivating display that evolves beautifully through the growing season. Fresh spring growth emerges in bright, feathery lime-green needles that soften the rigid architectural form with their delicate texture. Through summer, the foliage matures to a rich, deep green that provides a stunning backdrop for other plantings. Come autumn, ‘Lindsey’s Skyward’ delivers one of the garden’s most spectacular seasonal transformations, as the entire column blazes with warm russet, amber and copper tones before the needles drop cleanly for winter, revealing the elegant skeletal structure beneath.
Despite its swamp cypress heritage, Taxodium distichum ‘Lindsey’s Skyward’ proves remarkably adaptable to British growing conditions. Whilst it certainly thrives in moisture-retentive soils and can tolerate waterlogging better than most trees, it also performs admirably in ordinary garden conditions with regular moisture. This versatility makes it suitable for bog gardens, pond margins, rain gardens, or simply as a striking specimen in mixed borders where the soil doesn’t dry out excessively.
Care Guide for British Climate
Plant in full sun to partial shade, though the most compact columnar form develops with maximum sunlight. The soil should be moisture-retentive, fertile and slightly acidic to neutral, though this adaptable tree tolerates a range of conditions including heavy clay. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system, and maintain consistent moisture during dry spells, particularly for specimens not planted near water features.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. Mulch around the base with organic matter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk itself. Pruning is rarely necessary due to the naturally columnar habit, but any wayward branches can be removed in late winter whilst dormant. This cultivar shows excellent cold hardiness and requires no winter protection once established.
