The Western Red Cedar ‘Martin’ – Thuja plicata is a beautiful, compact evergreen conifer that makes a wonderful addition to any garden. This hardy variety is known for its dense, pyramidal shape and rich, green foliage that turns a lovely bronze-purple hue in the winter months.

At its current height of 40-60cm in a 3L container, the ‘Martin’ cultivar is an ideal choice for planting in borders, as a low hedge, or even in containers on patios and decks. Its relatively slow growth rate means it can be easily maintained at a manageable size, making it a great option for smaller gardens.

The aromatic, scale-like leaves of the Western Red Cedar release a pleasant, earthy fragrance when brushed or pruned, adding to its sensory appeal. This versatile plant thrives in a wide range of soil types, from acidic to alkaline, and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is also highly tolerant of urban pollution, coastal conditions, and drought, making it a resilient and low-maintenance choice for UK gardeners.

Western Red Cedar ‘Martin’ is a relatively easy-care plant that requires minimal maintenance. Plant it in well-drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded location. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then water as needed to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain the desired shape and size. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can damage the plant. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

With its compact size, attractive foliage, and low-maintenance requirements, the Western Red Cedar ‘Martin’ is an excellent choice for adding year-round interest and structure to UK gardens.
