The Hibi Arborvitae ‘Aurea’, botanically known as Thujopsis dolabrata ‘Aurea’, is a striking golden-variegated conifer that brings year-round architectural interest to gardens. This Japanese native stands out with its distinctive flattened, fan-like sprays of foliage that showcase a beautiful blend of green and golden-yellow hues.
The foliage consists of thick, snake-like waxy scales arranged in overlapping patterns, creating a dense, layered appearance. Each branch displays prominent golden variegation, particularly vibrant on new growth in spring, which gradually deepens to a more subtle gold as the season progresses. The undersides of the leaves feature striking silvery-white markings, adding to its ornamental appeal.
In British gardens, this slow-growing conifer thrives best in partial shade, where its golden colours shine without risk of scorching. It appreciates rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture, though established plants show good drought tolerance. For optimal growth, plant in a sheltered position away from harsh winds.
This architectural conifer works beautifully as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed border. Its naturally compact growth habit makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens or growing in containers. The golden foliage provides excellent contrast against dark green conifers and creates wonderful winter interest.
